ionic bomding Flashcards
what are ions
- ions are charged particles
- they can be single atoms Cl- or groups of atoms NO3-
*
when do ions form
ions form when atoms lose or gain electrons
why do atoms lose or gain electrons
to try and get a full outer shell to be stable
what happens when metals form ions
they lose electrons to form positive ions (cations)
what happens when non metals form ions
they gain electrons to form negative ions (anions)
what ions do group 1 ,2, 6, 7 form
- group 1 form +1
- group 2 form +2
- group 6 form -2
- group 7 form -1
in groups 1 and 2 is it easier or harder to remove electrons
easier to rewove electrons from outer shell so the elements get more reactive
in groups 6 and 7 is it easier or harder to remove electrons
harder for nucleus to attract extra electrons to form ions so the elements get less reactive as you go down
what happens when ions with opposite charges form ionic bonds
- when a metal and non metal react
- the metal loses electrons
- non metal gains electron
what type of forces form an ionic bond
- strong electrostatic forces
