Investigations Flashcards
CT neuro usage?
acute trauma and haemorrhage
Is neuro CT usually contrast?
Usually given with contrast to help enhance tumours, infections and infarcts.
What is purpose of T1 weighted MRI?
T1 weighted images enhance acute haemorrhage
What is the purpose of T2 weighted MRI
T2 weighted images enhance oedema, infarction, demyelination, chronic haemorrhage
What is an EEG?
Electrodes placed on the scalp; electrical activity of the brain recorded. Important in epilepsy evaluation.
What are evoked potentials?
Electrical potentials measured while nerves are repeatedly stimulated; commonest use is in visual evoked potentials to diagnosed MS.
What are nerve conduction studies?
Nerves stimulated and electrical activity measured from different points; conduction velocity can be recorded.
What is an EMG?
Electromyography records the electrical potentials from needle electrodes in muscle at rest and during contraction; can differentiate neuropathic and myopathic disorders
Where is LP fluid obtained from?
Needles inserted into the spinal column between L3/4 or L4/5
What is a tensilon test?
Short acting anticholinesterase (edrophonium) given IV to see if there is improvement in those with suspected myasthenia gravis
