Investigation skills Flashcards
What is a null hypothesis?
A null Hypothesis states that there is no relationship, causality or significant difference.
Key features of a good hypothesis
- Be able to be tested scientifically
- Relate one dependant variable to one independent variable.
Qualitative vs Quantitative
Qualitative- Refers to the appearance or value of something.
Examples such as colour observed or if bubbles are produced.
Quantitative- refers to numerical measurements made
Examples such as volume or time time measured.
Define Hazard
Equipment or substance that can cause harm
E.g. hot plate or hydrochloric acid
Define Risk
The harm that the hazard could cause and the chances of it happening.
E.g. Risk from Hydrochloric acid is skin corrosion or chemical burns.
Independent variable is
A variable that you change during an investigation.
Dependant variable is
A variable that you measure during an investigation.
Control variable is
A variable that stays constant during an investigation.
Producing a method- The 7 steps to consider
1- What you are testing 2- What you want to measure 3- How you are going to measure 4- What techniques you will use 5- What variables you must control 6-How many repeats 7-What to do with the data
Define patterns
The shape pf the graph
Define Trends
The relationship between factors on the graph or in the table
Define conclusion
How well your results support your hypothesis
What is accuracy
Is the data close to the true value
What is reliability
How trustworthy the data is
What is precision
How close repeat readings are to each other
