Investigation 1 Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that has weight and occupies space is called matter.
What are the 3 forms of matter?
Three form of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
What are solids?
Solids have mass, take up space, and have a definite volume and definite shape
What is a liquid?
Liquid is a material that takes the shape of the container it is in, has a definite volume, has mass, and takes up space.
What is a gas?
A gas occupies all the volume of the container it is in - no definite volume or shape. They also have mass and take up space.
What is a mixture?
Combination of 2 or more materials is called a mixture.
What are some examples of solids and liquid mixtures?
flour and water, cereal and milk
What are some examples of gas and liquid mixtures?
CO2 in liquid form bubbles and evaporate
What are some examples of solid and gas mixtures?
Snow - it is a mixture of air and frozen water
What is a solution?
special mixture that forms when 1 or more substances dissolve each other
What does it mean to dissolve?
breaks into peices that are invisible
What are some example of dissolving?
salt and H2O become saltwater solution and salt becomes invisible
What is soluble?
solid substance that dissolves into water
What is insoluble?
does not dissolve
What is solubility?
the ability of a substance to dissolve or not
What is an example of insoluble mixture?
Water and sand
Can mixtures be separated?
Yes
What are some of the ways in which mixtures can be separated?
Mixtures can be separated using differences in physical properties of the components, such as size - large or small, different evaporation ability, floating or sinking, magnetic or non-magnetic.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is the change of state from liquid to gas.
How can salt be separated from water in a salt water solution?
Through evaporation. Water evaporates, but salt doesn’t?
How can a mixture of paper clips, toothpicks and sand be separated?
We can use a magnet to pick out all the paper clips since paper clips are magnetic. Sand and toothpick mixture can be separated using water. Toothpicks will float and sand will sink.
