Investigating Matter: Classification Of Matter Flashcards
Mixture
Things that were not chemically together being mixed
Heterogenous- Do not look the same throughout
Pure substance
The same throughout, no different if it was cut
Homogenous- has the same appearance
Heterogenous
Do not look the same throughout
Examples: soil, rocky road ice cream
Homogenous
Has the same appearance
Examples: sugar water, pure air
Mechanical mixture
Mixture
Heterogenous
Can be separated easily
Example: pencils in a cup, salad, trail mix
Suspension
Heterogenous
A mixture with distinct sedimentation( when sand mixes with water, U can still c the sand)
May or may not have the same phase
Example: sand and water, tomato juice
Solution
Homogenous
A substance that is the same throughout, but is a mixture
Has the same appearance
Example: salt water(when salt mixes with water, it dissolves and looks like regular water)
Compounds
Pure substance Homogenous Made up of 2 or more different types of atoms Can be broken down chemically Example: water (H2o), carbon dioxide
Elements
Pure substance Homogenous Made up of only one type of atom Cannot be broken down into simpler particles Example: copper, chlorine, oxygen, iron
