Investigating matter/ Atomic structure Flashcards
what is volume?
amount of space that a substance or object takes up
what are the three states?
solid, liquid, gas
what is conductivity?
measure of how easily electricity or heat can pass through
describe an element
it cannot be broken down into simpler substances
what is mass?
the amount of matter in an object
what happens when heat is added to a substance
particles gain kinetic energy and vibrate faster
what change of state requires the removal of heat?
melting
what is the temperature in which a solid changes into a liquid?
melting point
what is the temperature in which a liquid changes into a gas?
boiling point
what electric charge does a proton have?
positive ( + )
what electric charge does a neutron have?
neutral ( 0 )
what electric charge does an electron have?
negative ( - )
where are protons located?
nucleus
where are electrons located?
surrounding the nucleus
where are neutrons located?
nucleus
how is liquid different from a solid in shape and volume?
liquids have a definite volume but it’s shape depends on the container it is in, but solids have a definite shape and volume
how are gases and liquids similar in shape and volume?
there shape is both determined by there surroundings
how are solids and gases different in the amount of space between particles?
The particles in a solid are packed together tightly, but the particles in a gas have very large spaces between them
How does the space between particles change as energy is added to the particles?
Particles gain kinetic energy and vibrate faster, causing them to move farther apart
what does the kinetic molecular theory describe?
it describes how changes in the kinetic energy of particles can result in changes in state
what is a chemical change?
a change in matter that occurs when substances combine to form new substances
what is a physical change?
a change in appearance but no new substances form
the change from a solid to a liquid is an example of a change of ______.
state
what temperature does water condense?
100°C
