Invertebrates Flashcards
What is the phylum for sponges?
Porifera
What type of body symmetry do porifera have?
Assymmetrical
What is the level of organization for sponges?
Primitive animals, cellular garde organization
Motility of porifera
Sessile- need a substratum to attached themselves, they don’t mvoe
Mode of nutrition for sponges
Filter feeders
Skeleton of porifera
spicules or spongin fibres
Reproduction and fertilization of porifera
Hermaphrodites- internal fertilization
Development of porifera
Indirect- larval stage is morphologically distinct from the adult
Water transport in a porifera
Sponges have water transport system. Water enters through minute pores (ostia) in the body wall into a central cavity known as spongocoel. From the spongocoel water goes out through the osculum. This water system aids in food gathering, respiratory exchange and removal of wastes.
What are choanocytes
collar cells, they line the spongocoel and the canals.
Examples of porifera
Sycon, Euspongia, Spongilla.
What is the phylum for jellyfish?
Cnidaria (Coelentrata)
What is the level of organization for coelentrata?
Tissue level
What is the body wall of a coelentrata like?
They are diploblastic animals, body wall is made of 2 layers, outer ectoderm and inner endoderm.
Body symmetry of coelentrata
radial
Digestive system of coelentrata
central gastro-vascular cavity with a single opening hypostome, which serves as both the mouth and the anus.
Digestive system of coelentrata
extra- and intra-cellular
What are cnidoblasts?
specialized cells of coelentrata that are used for anchorage, defense and capture of prey
Skeleton of coelentrata like corals composed of this
Calcium carbonate
Two basic body forms of coelentrata
polyp and medusa. The polyp is a sessile form ann cylindrical in shape like the Hydra, Adamsia etc. The medusae form is umbrella shaped and free-swimming forms like Aurelia or jelly-fish.
How do cnidarians undergo metagenesis?
Cnidarians which exhibit both polyp and medusae form are exhibit alteration of generation, this is known as metagenesis. Poplyps produce medusae asexually and medusae form the polyps sexually.
Locomotion of cnidarians
nerve network allows movement of tentacles and body
Examples of cnidarians
Aurelia (medusa), Adamsia (polyp).
