Inventory Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is the objective of forest inventory?
Description of type and quality of forest resources present in area, and the location of these resources.
What is mensuration?
measurement of tree characteristics and products cut from them
What is cruising?
Sampling forest to estimate volume, specie composition, quality of timber, and other data required to determine the value (for stumpage/sale)
What are the basic tree measurements?
Diameter Height Age Characteristics including: -species -volume -taper -wood quality -canopy position -percent live crown -health
What is basal area?
Cross sectional area of a tree at breast height
What is the formula for basal area?
Pai x diameter squared, divided by 4
What is the formula for BA(m2/ha)
Pai x (DBH)2 divided by 40,000
How do you measure height?
Top% - Bottom% x (%of 100 m)
What are the 4 distinct crown classes? Describe each List the one other possible crown class that you might find
-Dominant Crowns extend above general level of canopy -Codominant form general level of canopy -Intermediate Crown extend into foliage of Codom's -Suppressed Crowns entirely below canopy level -Veteran Extends well above dominant trees (left behind during previous harvest)
What is the main purpose of timber inventory?
To determine what standing trees will look like as logs
What are some common sources of error when measuring DBH?
- Reading zero wrong
- Tape not horizontal around tree
- Tape not tight
- Incorrect height
- Reading wrong side of tape
What are some common sources of error in heigh measurement?
- Poor view of top or bottom
- Angle too steep (too close to tree)
- Incorrect reading of clino
- Improper HD calculations
- incorrect +/-
What are some age calculation sources of error?
-Missing the pith
-Mis-counting the rings
-Improper extrapolation
-Dirty or dull increment bore
Pockets of tree decay
