What is the periodic table?
It is a table or chart that displays information all about the known elements
What is an element?
A pure substance that cannot be broken into something simpler and is always on the periodic table
Can elements appear off of the periodic table?
No, they cannot
What is an element symbol?
An abbreviation for an element and some abbreviations are based on the Latin names
Are the symbols the same in different language countries
Yes, it’s the same all over the world, no matter the language
What are the 3 rules to writing element symbols?
- Symbols always begin with a capital
- If there is a 2nd or 3rd letter, lowercase
- There are no periods at the end, unless it comes at the end of a sentence
What states of matter are elements found?
(Room temperature)
Elements are either found in solids, liquids, or gases
Whats the most common state of matter an element is formed in?
Solid
What are compounds
A compound is a pue substance made of 2 or more elements
Ex. H2O

How are the elements of the periodic table sorted?
They are sorted by there atomic mass
What is atomic mass?
The mass of one atom of the element
What are the empty spaces in the periodic table?
They are elements that haven’t been discovered yet
What are the different ways that the periodic table is organized?
- Metals, non metals and metalloids
- 7 rows which are called periods
- 18 columns that are called groups
- Ordered by atomic number
What is a metal?
An element that is lustrous, malleable, ductile, and conducts heat and electricity.
