Introduction to the nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
What is the nervous system made of?
A
- neurones (nerve cells)
- glia (supporting cells)
~100 billion neurones in the human brain alone!
2
Q
What are the structures found in neurones?
A
- soma (cell body)
- axon
- dendrites
- terminals
- organelles (nucleus, mitochondria, ER, golgi, ribosomes etc.)
3
Q
How do neurones work?
A
Neuronal activity must be coordinated by:
- electrical activity within the neurone
- synaptic transmission between neurones (and other cells)
4
Q
How is the nervous system organised?
A
- peripheral vs central (brain and spinal cord)
- sensory (afferent) vs motor (efferent)
- somatic vs autonomic
5
Q
What does the nervous system do?
A
Everything! ie. movement, learning, consciousness, autonomic control
