Introduction to the living cell Flashcards
Cell definition
Fundamental unit of all living things on earth
Cell function
Cells take nutrients and free energy from their surroundings and make copies of themselves
Who is known as the “Father of microbiology” and why?
Antoine van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723)
He was the first person to see bacteria, red blood cells, protists & more with the microscopes he created.
Who published the book “Micrographia” and why was he known?
Robert Hooke(1665)was the first person to name what we refer to as the smallest unit of life .
What were Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleidens profressions and what did they realise?
Theodor Schwann =physiologist
Matthias Jakob Schleiden=botanist
They studied animal & plant tissue by microscopy and compared notes to realise “all living things are composed of cells and cell products”
What was Barthélémy du Mortiers (1797-1878)report and how did that help scientists over the years ?
He was the first person who reported observing cells doubling by cell division.
He observed that a single cell starts by forming a barrier in the middle and then divided into two cells .
This helped over the next few decades with infectious disease as it shows it does not arise spontaneously.
What was Robert Kochs (1843-1910)realisation ?give examples
Realised that many dieases are caused by micro bacteria such as anthrax and tuberculosis
State kochs postulates
- microorganism must be found in abundance in the person or animal suffering the infectious disease
- you must be able to isolate the organism and grow then in a culture
- if you use the cultured organisms and introduce them until a healthy animal ,it must cause the same disease
- must be able to isolate the organism again after the reinoculation
