Introduction to taxonomy Flashcards
What is taxonomy
This is the study of basics, principles, practise and procedures of classification.
Plant taxonomy
study of description of variation, causes and conseuences of variation and manipulation of data obtained to form a system of classification.
Why classify
There are 250k-300k species, in order to understand diversity a system of classification is necessary
How is classification possible
Due to discontinuous variations known as disimilarities
Role of taxonomy in biological sciences
as a queen because all other sciences lead to development and improvement of system of classification
as a servant because it serves other sciences by providing information
Role of taxonomists
to identify and name plants
to find unique plant characteristics
make inventories of plants
map origin and phylogeny of plants
find out geographical distribution and plant habitat
why is taxonomy useful
human impact: every plant is unique and important
increase plant understanding
increase understanding of evolutionary processes
helps mankind appreciate diversity.
systematics vs taxonomy
systematics studies evolution and plant phylogeny and taxonomy
systematics
study of diversity and history of organisation of plants and evolutionary rships between them.
classification
as a process; ordering plants to hierarchical groups
as a product; arrangement of system expressing inter relationships
description
record of characteristics of a group
