Introduction to Systems Flashcards
What is engineering all about? What do we use to achieve this?
Engineering is all about controlling the form and flow of energy. Systems are used to achieve this
What is a system, what must all systems consist of?
A system is a collection of components that process an input in order to achieve the desired output.
What are the different types of systems?
A system can consist of mechanical, electrical, or electronic, pneumatic or hydraulic components.
What is an example of simple systems? What is an example of a complex systems?
Systems may be simple (such as a lever) or very complex (such as a powerful gaming computer or a CAD workstation)
Explain a mechanical system.
Combination of components organised to modify motion, they change movement and force into a more desirable form. Examples include lever, inclined plane, wheel, gears, door handles, water taps, switches, wheelbarrows and scissors.
Explain an electrical system
Electrical systems are used to supply electricity and include non-semiconductor components such as motors, transformers, solenoids, switches, lighting (except LED lighting) and batteries.
Explain an electronic system
Electronic systems include all semiconductor-based devices, sensors and all digital systems whether programmable or not. Electronic systems always require electricity and must therefore include an electrical subsystem.
What is the definition of a force?
Energy that when used causes movement.
What is the definition of acceleration?
The rate of change of the velocity of an object in respect to time
What is the definition of inertia?
A property of matter in which if an object is at rest or in motion it will continue in a straight line unless acted upon by another force.
What is the definition of equilibrium?
A state where opposite forces are balanced meaning that it will either be at rest or moving at a constant speed. When forces are balanced on an object meaning it will either be at rest or moving at a constant speed
What is the definition of soldering?
Solder is a metal alloy (60% tin & 40% lead) with low melting point. It is used to join two metal surfaces by alloying (in the molten state) with their surfaces.
What is the definition of short circuits?
When there is not enough resistance in a circuit there is too much current flow which can melt the wires and even create fire.
What is the definition of closed and open circuits?
Electrons will only flow if there is a continuous loop so the electrons can travel from the positive end of the battery to the negative end. Once the loop is finished the circuit is completed and electrons will flow.
How does a 3D printer work?
In the 3D printing process, sequential layers of material are laid down by the ‘3D printer’ until object creation is completed and ‘printed’.
