Introduction to stress and srain Flashcards
What is one pascal equal to?
1NM^-1
What is normal stress?
Stress that acts perpendicularly to the cross-section of the material and can be either tensile or compressive.
What is tensile stress?
Stress with a force acting out of the area to which it is applied causing the material to elongate.
What is compressive stress?
Stress with a force acting inwards of the area to which it is applied causing the material to contract.
What is normal strain?
E=change in length/original length
What is the coefficient of thermal expansion
The rate at which a object expands with temperature
What is shear stress?
(tau), is defined as the shear force (V) divided by the shear area
What is shear strain?
Defined as the change in angle between two originally mutually perpendicular edges.
Hooke’s Law
Stating that the strain in a solid is proportional to the applied stress within the elastic limit of that solid.
What is shear modulus?
G, is also known as the modulus of rigidity and can be defined as the ratio of shear stress to shear strain.
G= τ/γ
What is poisson effect/poisson’s ratio?
When a material is subjected to tensile load in one direction, in contracts in the other direction.
How do you determine whether a material is ductile or brittle
nd=(yield stress)/(applied stress)
nb=(ultimate stress)/(applied stress)
