Psychology
the study of human behavior, cognitive processes, and attitudes
Cognitive Processes
(AKA “Thought Processes”) explain how the mind works. This includes memory, perception, attention, decision-making, and reasoning. Existing knowledge is used to create new knowledge.
Physiology
refers to the role of biological systems: brain, nervous system, hormones, and genetics in behavior
Attitudes
feelings of dislike or liking of an object, person, or idea. Attitude can affect behavior.
Emotions
a combination of physiological and cognitive processes. Seven basic emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust, and contempt.
Biological Approach to Psychology
focuses on physiology including genetics
Cognitive Approach to Psychology
focuses on mental processes like memory, thinking, perspective, and attention.
Social-Cultural Approach to Psychology
focuses on the effects of environments and culture on behavior
Emperical Data
information acquired by observation or experimentation
Anecdotal Data
personal experience that challenges or supports a theory
Pop Psychology/Pseudoscience
Unfounded conclusions based on popular opinion
“Urban Myth”
Theory
explanation for a psychological phenomenon. It is a statement used to summarize, organize, and explain observations.
