Introduction to Pharmacology Flashcards
What is pharmacology?
The study of drugs and their actions on the body
What is pharmacokinetics?
What the body does to the drug
What is pharmacodynamics?
What the the drug does to the body
What is pharmacotherapeutics?
The study of the use of drugs
What is dose?
The quantity of drug administered at one time.
What is dosage?
The amount of the drug that should be given over time.
What are the 3 routes of drug administration?
Enteral
Parenteral
Topical
What does the enteral route include?
Oral
Sublingual
Rectal
What does the parental (injectable) route include?
Intravenous
Intramuscular
Subcutaneous
What does the tropical route include?
Intranasal
Inhalation
Intravaginal
What is bioavailability?
The fraction of administered drug that actually reaches the systemic circulation in a chemically unchanged form.
What is the volume of distribution?
The volume in which the amount of drug would need to be uniformly distributed to produce the observed blood concentration
What is metabolism?
The process of transformation of a drug within the body
What is the peak plasma drug concentration?
The maximum concentration of the drug obtained after administration of single dose of the drug.
What is an agonist?
A compound that binds to a receptor and produces a biological response.
