Introduction to Pharmacology Flashcards
Define pharmacology?
It is the study of the drug molecule’s Actions, Uses, Mechanism of action and Adverse Effects.
Define pharmacodynamics?
It is the study of the biomedical and physiological effects of drugs and their mechanism of action.
Define pharmacokinetics?
- It is the study of bodily absorption and excretion of drugs.
- It means the movement of drugs inside the body.
What does ADME refers to in pharmacokinetics?
It refers to the characteristics interactions of a drug and the body in terms of its absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion.
What are the 4 types of therapeutic methods used to treat diseases?
- Drug therapy
- Diet therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Psychological therapy
Define drug therapy?
It is treatment with drugs.
Define diet therapy?
It is treatment by diet(e.g low salt diet for cardiac diseases).
Define physiotherapy?
It is a treatment where natural forces(water, light & heat) is used.
What does a psychological therapy do?
It helps to identify stressors and methods to reduce or eliminate stress/use of drugs.
What are the 6 things to remember concerning relevance of pharmacology?
- use Right Drug
- given to Right Patient
- given Right Dose
- given by Right Route
- given at Right Time
- Right Documentation
What are the variables that affect drug actions?
- Age
- Pregnancy
- Body weight
- Gender hormonal effects
- Pathological conditions
- Placebo
Define Toxicology?
It is the study of poisonous effects of drugs.
What are the routes that provide slow absorption of drugs?
- Orally(swallowed)
- Through Mucus Membranes
- Topical/Transdermal (through skin)
- Rectally(Suppository)
What are the routes that provide faster absorption of drugs?
- Parentally(injection)= IV,IM,SC and others.
- Inhaled(through lungs)
The regulation controlling the supply of medcines fall into four categories. What are they?
- Prescription Only Medcine - Controlled Drug(POM CD)
- Prescription Only Medcine (POM)
- Pharmacy only medcine (P)
- General Sale List (GSL) or Over The Counter (OTC)
