What is Ornamental Horticulture
It is the area of horticulture which deals with the growth and use of plants for their beauty .
Ornamental horticulture involves the production and use of flowering and foliage plants both indoors and outdoors.
Different segments of Ornamental Horticulture Industry
Floriculture- Producing ,transporting, and using flowering and foliage plants. It is associated with cut flowers, potted plants, and annual bedding plants.
Landscape Horticulture includes designing landscaping plans and landscape maintenance.
Both involves the use of flowering and foliage plants
History of Ornamental Horticulture
Earliest gardens were made by ancient Egyptians and Sumerians over 5000 years ago.
Amongst earliest civilizations, Egyptians cultivated plants for its aesthetic value.
Over centuries refined techniques of horticulture production, recorded and document various ornamentals
Ancient Romans (2500 years ago) recognized the value of ornamental horticulture in lives of people.
Romans built gracious villas with large gardens.
Renaissance Period (16th century) Garden of Italians.
Garden of Versailles built by Andre Le Notre (17th century)
In 18th century, English Naturalism garden gained popularity.
English explores started collecting ornamentals and preserved as herbariums.
Asia: Chinese> Koreans> Japanese
Built gardens close to Buddhism, focused on elements of the natural world.
Americans built rich repository of ornamental plants.
Moorish Garden of Southern Spain gained popularity, botanic gardens, green houses, nurseries, seed producing centers, landscape architecture and lawn.
