Introduction to Organic Chemistry AS Flashcards
Define Structural Isomers
Isomers with the same molecular formula, but different structural formulas.
Explain Chain Isomers
Have the same functional groups but different carbon arrangements
Explain Positional Isomers
Functional groups are attached to different carbon atoms.
Explain functional group isomers
Same atom arrangements but are a part of a different homologous series
What is sterioisomerism?
Molecules with the same molecular and structural formula but a different arrangement of the atoms in space.
How do you know if molecules have E/Z isomerism?
If both C of the C=C have two of the same groups attached
Explain E-isomers
Have the same group positioned across the double bond.
Explain Z-isomers
Have the same group either (both) above or below the double bond.
Give the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules
The atom with the higher atomic number on each of the C in the C=C is given the higher priority.
