Introduction To Neuro-anatomy Flashcards
What are the two important components of the Nervous system?
CNS - Brain (encephalon) & spinal chord (medulla spinalis)
PNS - composed of the sensory and motor parts
Basic function of the CNS?
Receive and process sensory input through the sensory system and other parts of the body and to activate appropriate actions to the external/internal stimuli through the motor system.
Sensory PNS subdivision
Specialised sensation - composed of specialised sense organs whereas; include vision, olfaction, taste, hearing, and equilibrium & position
General sensation - lack specialised sense organs and can be found throughout the body. Further subdivided into somatic/ extero-receptive sensation (which is localised and superficial e.g. skin and locomotion) and visceral/proprioreceptive sensation (which is vague and deep e.g. Dull pain and distension of the abdomen)
