What are the 3 forms of human expression?
- Social Nationalism
Did we act out of a need to express ourselves or our culture? - Economic Nationalism
Did we act out to fulfill an economic need? To create or consume wealth? - Political Nationalism
Did we act out to respond to a relationship or need/want? Or how we chose to be governed?
What are the 2 Key Definitions for Nation?
- A group of people with a common desire for sovereignty.
Sovereignty: political authority to control one’s own affairs; recognition by others that you have control of your affairs. - A group of people who share a common history, culture, and language, and common goals for the future.
What is a Nation-State?
Nation-State: Sovereign (independent) state with a central gov. And defined borders that are internationally recognized. (a physical place with defined borders)
Often, common language, heritage, and values
What are the types of nations?
- A geographic nation exists when a geographic feature forces people to develop in isolation from others
Ex. Tibet, it was isolated from surrounding cultures by the mountains. People in the world’s arctic region can also be included in this group. - A religious nation shares a bound of faith and traditions and practices of that faith, even though it may be separated geographically.
- A nation may develop unique cultural elements based on their relationship to their environment, to the land. This nation may be influenced by its spiritual connection to the land.
Ex. indigenous nations are included in this category as the have a strong connection to their environment and their spiritual world. - A cultural nation shares a way of life, cultural and ethnic nations can be similar but are not always identical
- An ethnic nation is a group of people who share racial, cultural, and linguistic characteristics
- A lingistic nation, language helps create a shared world view that gives people a sense of nation.
Ex. Quebecois in Canada; Francophone nations of the world united by the organization La Francophonie - A civic nation emerges from the choice of citizens to live together under the laws that reflect their shared values and beliefs and similar world views. Mutual respect for laws enable people to live peacefully
- A political nation is a nation that is united in its desire for self-determination and sovereignty
Self-determination: the power to have a say in your future; to have control of what becomes your nation (border lines, a political system adopted, writing of a Constitution, etc)
Ex. the Metis Nation; Tibet under Chinese rule since 1948.
It does not always mean independence
What does diaspora mean?
The term diaspora refers to the members of a nation who live outside the traditionally recognized territory of the nation. Many Canadians identify themselves as members of a national (ethnic) diaspora. They still feel connected to their ethnic or cultural nation. They follow the events in the traditional homeland, may cheer for the sports team, and provide aid during a crisis or natural disaster
What does nationalist, patriot, and patriotism mean?
Nationalist: someone who loves and defends their country
Patriot: someone who is willing to sacrifice/die for their country
Patriotism: the belief that a person should be willing to die for theier nation/country
