Introduction to Materials Flashcards
Materials
Substances which things are composed of
Material History
Culture and history as a whole have been impacted by what materials were accessible. Advancements in materials coincide with new eras of human development.
Elements
Consist of only one type of particle or atom; cannot be broken down any further
Criteria for Element Classification
Based on individual properties, grouped based on shared properties, and the amount of the substance is irrelevant.
Metal Elements
Good conductors of heat and electricity; hard, shiny, malleable, and ductile
Nonmetal Elements
Gas at room temperature; brittle, powdery; poor conductors of heat and electricity
Metalloids
Possess a mix of metal and nonmetal properties
Compounds
Most substances are compounds; compounds are created when two or more elements are chemically combined, and this results in new chemical properties. This can only be reversed through chemical processes
Mixtures
Non-chemical combination of two or more substances; can be physically seperated
Types of Materials
Metallic
Ceramic
Organic
Polymeric
