introduction to lenses ( lecture 1 ) Flashcards

1
Q

what is a corrective lens?

A

. it is worn in front of the eye to correct vision
. in spectacles it is mounted in a frame
. in contact lenses it fits directly on the surface of the cornea

Q

what are the types of lenses ?

A

. convex - positive , light converges
thicker in the middle , thinner edge
. concave - negative , light diverges
thinner middle , thicker edge

different power in meridian

max and min power are 90 deg to one another

what is a prism?

A

transparent block of material plastic or glass that refracts light

8
Q

what happens in prisms?

A

light enters prism from air and slows down , this is because material in prism is denser than air , slowing of light causes light to bend which results in refraction

10
Q

describe the structure of prism?

A

prism is thickest in base ,so light bends towards base of prism

Q

where is image displaced in prisms?

A

image is displaced in the apex of prisms which is the thinnest point in prism

Q

what are lenses composed off ?

A

lenses are composed of two surfaces
front surface = furthest from eye
back surface = closest to the eye

16
Q

what is a plano lens ?

A

no power

17
Q

what are the types of plano lens ?

A

plano concave - It has one surface plane and the other surface concave.
plano convex - It has one surface plane and the other surface convex

18
Q

what is a bi-concave or bi-convex lens?

A

It has both the surfaces concave or convex but different powers

19
Q

what is equi convex or equi concave lens ?

A

both surface concave or convex and same power

20
Q

what is a minscus lens ?

A

one concave and one convex surface , most used and give best vision when looking away

21
Q

what are the types of lens forms ?

A

. equi concave/convex
. bi concave / convex
. minscus lens
. plano concave/convex

22
Q

what is a thin lens ?

A

. a thin lens is when two surfaces are in close contact ,

so refractive index between two materials is ignored

23
Q

what is the power of a thin lens (F v ‘)?

A

sum of power of 2 surfaces

F1+F2

24
Q

How to use prisms by themselves?

A

to deviate light when patients eyes don’t work together
