Introduction to Haematology Flashcards
Where are blood cells made?
bone marrow
What is the process by which blood cells are made called?
haemopoiesis
What are blood cells produced from?
haemopoietic stem cells
What is Haemoglobin?
The oxygen carrier protein in the red blood cells
The three different Haemoglobins?
- Embryonic
- Foetal
- Adult Haemoglobin
Who uses the Haematology lab?
- Primary Health Care: GP
- Secondary Care: hospital
- Tertiary Care: centres and hospitals that provide specialised care
What % of CO2 is carried by the haemoglobin for excretion?
10%
What is the other 90% of CO2 carried by for excretion?
Carried as bicarbonate in plasma
function of white cells (2)
- Fighting infection
- Immune response
What are platelets also called?
Thrombocytes
Function of platelets? (1)
To assisst in blood haemostasis
What does plasma contain?
- Water, nutrients: glucose, fatty acids, vitamins, hormones, waste products of metabolism
- Plasma proteins: Albumin (NB for osmotic balance) and Immunoglobulins (antibodies)
- Salts: sodium, potassium, calcium (NB for osmotic balance and pH buffering)
- Coagulation factors
What does the Buffy Coat contain and where is it positioned?
It contains white cells and platelets. It is at the interface between red cells and plasma.
What is plasma used to measure?
Parameters such as coagulation (clotting) factors
