Introduction to Exercise Physiology Flashcards
Physiology
is the study of the function of organisms
Homeostasis
is the maintenance of a constant internal environment.
Exercise physiology
is the study of how body structure and function are altered by exposure to acute and chronic bouts of exercise/
Environmental Physiology
is the study of the effects of the environment on the function of the body .
Sport physiology
is the application of the concepts of exercise physiology to training athletes and enhancing sport performance
Acute Exercise
is a single bout of exercise
Chronic adaptation
is a physiological change that occurs when the body is exposed to repeated exercise bouts over weeks or months; such changes generally improve the body’s efficiency at rest and during exercise
Erometers
- Measure physical work in standardized conditions
- used most commonly in treadmills and cycles
Sagittal Plane
Movement cuts body into a right and Left side
Ex. exercise: forward lunge, bicep curl, front raise
Coronal/ Frontal Plane
Movement cuts body into a front and back side
Ex. exercise: Lateral Raise, Body squat, shoulder press
Transverse/ Horizontal Plane
Movement cuts body into a top and bottom
Ex. exercise: push-up, bench press, seated row
Isometric
a muscular contraction in which the length of the muscle does not change
Isotonic
A muscular contraction in which the length of the muscle changes
Eccentric
An isotonic contraction where the muscle lengthens
Concentric
An isotonic contraction where the muscle shortens
