What does The Equality Act of 2010 aim to do?
It seeks out to ensure equality of opportunity within UK society
Also aims to legislate against direct and indirect discrimination
What is illegal thanks The Equality Act 2010
It is illegal to discriminate against people on the basis of certain ‘protective characteristics’
What does Th Equality Act 2010 not affect?
Free speech

- Age

- Pregnancy and maternity
- Race
- Religion and belief
- Sex

Who has a disability?
Any person that has a physical or mental impairment which has substantial and long term verse effect on the persons ability to carry out normal day to dat activities
What is gender reassignment?
The process of transitioning from one gender to another
What does maternity refer t?
Refers to the period after the birth of a child and is linked to maternity leave in the employment context
What does race refer to?
Refers to a group of people defined by their:
- race
- colour
- nationality (including citizenship)
- ethnic or national origins.
Is ‘positive discrimination’ legal?
No
Define absolute right
A right that is so fundamental that it can never be interfered with for example the rich tot to be tortured
Define asylum seeker
A person seeking refuge in a nation other thaws or her own
Define BAME
Black, Asian and minority ethnic
Define culture
Th distinctive ideas, customs and social behaviour, products to way of life of a particulate society people to period (A society or group of people characterised by such customs)
Define disability
A disabled person is described as one who has a physical or mental impairment which has substantial and Lon term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day to day activities
Define DIRECT discrimination
Less favourable treatment of a person compared to anther person because of a protect characteristic
Define INDIRECT discrimination
The use of apparently neutral’s practice, provision or criterion which puts people with a particular protected characteristic at disadvantage compared with others who do not share ht characteristic
Define positive discrimination
Treating someone with a protected characteristic more favourably to counteract the effects of past discrimination
(Exception when making reasonable adjustments to four disabled people )
Define diversity
Diversity is about recognising, valuing and taking account of peoples different backgrounds, knowledge, skills and experiences and using those differences to create a productive and effective workplace
Define duel heritage
People of mixed ethnic origin
What word should we not use when describing people with duel heritage?
Half caste (this is offensive)
Define equality
The condition of having equal dignity, ranks or privilege with others
What is the equality impact assessment
A tool used to ensure discrimination doesn’t arise due to changes in the workplace and that recruitment practices are fair
Define ethnicity
A group regards as a distinct community by virtue of certain essential characteristics (a shared history which distinguishes it from other groups and cultural tradition of its own
Define ethnic minority
A group of people differentiated from the rest of the community by racial origins or cultural background and usually claiming or enjoying official recognition of their group identity
What is gender sometimes replaced with in regards to equality issues?
Sex
What is gender reassignment
It is a personal, social and sometimes medical process by which a persons gender presentation is changed
Does every transsexual person go through gender reassignment?

What are genuine occupation requirements?
Where having a protected characteristic is an occupational requirement, certain jobs can be reserved for people with that protected characteristic
Give the requirements employers out present if they are putting a protective characteristic into their occupation requirement
The requirement must be:
- Crucial to the post and not just one o several important factors
- Relating to the job in question rather than the nature of the employing organisation
- A proportionate means of achieving legitimate aim
Define harassment
Behaviour which s unwelcome of unacceptable and which results in the creation of a stressful or intimidating environment for the victim
What can harassment consist of
- Verbal abuse
- Racist jokes
- Insensitive comments
- Physical contact
- Unwanted sexual advances
