Decoding involves three skills:
- phonological awareness
- alphabetic knowledge
- orthographic knowledge
ability to segment sounds, rhyme, and identify syllables.
Phonological awareness
understanding that letters are used to represent speech sounds
Alphabetic knowledge, or The Alphabetic Principle,
understanding of the writing system in order to represent language this can include spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
Orthographic knowledge
