Introduction to CP Flashcards
What is CP?
“CP describes a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitations that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain”
Static brain lesion
Progressive musculoskeletal impairments in most children but with intervention improvements can be made
What else can CP cause disturbances in?
Cognition, behavior, communication, sensation, perception and epilepsy
What is some pathophysiology/etiology related to CP?
can be Prenatal, perinatal, postnatal
type of injury can be :Hypoxic, ischemic, infectious, congenital, traumatic
Preterm birth, uterine abnormalities, multiple births, genetics
How is CP diagnosed?
Neuroimaging findings
Clinical findings – GMA, HINE, MRI
Risk factors
Child does not reach milestones, demonstrates abnormal muscle tone or qualitative differences in movement patterns
What test has best combination of sensitivity and specificity for predicting CP in the early months?
Prechtl’s Assessment of General Movements
Which tests are better for as infants age?
AIMS and NSMDA
What are some differential diagnoses related to CP?
brain tumors, metabolic abnormalities
