Introduction to Chemistry Flashcards
Define “chemistry”
The study of matter and the changes it undergoes; describes observed properties and changes using particles involved
Define “model”
A visual, verbal, or mathematical explanation for data
Define “quantitative”
Data obtained using a measuring device; always consists of a value (number) with the correct number of significant figures and a unit
Define “mass”
A measurement (usually in grams) of the amount of matter
Define “qualitative”
Anything that relates to the senses; physical characteristics
Define “volume”
A measurement (often in mL) of the amount of space matter takes up
Define “density”
The amount of mass in a given volume; can be visualized using the particle model
Beaker
For holding and heating liquids, NOT for measuring liquid volumes
Erlenmeyer flask
For holding and heating liquids. NOT for measuring liquid volumes
Volumetric flask
For preparing precise volumes of solutions
Graduated cylinder
For measuring liquid volumes
Evaporating dish
For evaporating liquids
Crucible with lid
For heating solids over a bunsen burner
Clay triangle
For holding a crucible on a ring stand
Crucible tongs
For picking up and moving hot crucibles and lids
Wire screen
For supporting beakers and evaporating dishes on a ring stand
Ring stand
Used to support other pieces of lab equipment such as crucibles, wire screens, etc.
Iron ring clamp
Attached to a ring stand; supports wire screens, clay triangles, and funnels
