Introduction to Chemistry Flashcards
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of matter and is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.
What is an element?
It is only made up of one sort of atom.
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms covalently bonded together. The atoms can be of the same element or different elements.
What is a compound?
Two or more different types of atoms bonded together. The bonding can be either ionic or covalent.
What is a mixture?
Two or more different elements and/or compounds in the same space. They can be separated into the individual components.
Which compound ions form +1 ions?
Ammonium, NH4+
Which compound ions form -1 ions?
- Hydroxide, OH-
- Nitrate, NO3-
- Hydrogen Sulfate, HSO4-
- Hydrogencarbonate, HCO3-
- Dihydrogenphospate, H2PO4-
Which compound ions form -2 ions?
- Carbonate ion, CO32-
- Sulfate ion, SO42-
- Hydrogen phosphate, HPO42-
Which compound ions form -3 ions?
Phosphate ion, PO43-
What is an acid?
A substance that donates H+ ions.
What is a base?
A substance that accepts H+ ions.
What is an alkali?
A base that releases hydroxide ions in aqueous solution.
What is a salt?
It is formed when the hydrogen ions from an acid are replaced by a metal or ammonium ion.
