Introduction to Cell:Cell Signalling Systems Flashcards
1
Q
What is Endocrine signalling?
A
- Signalling molecules (such as hormones and growth factors) act on a distant group of target cells
- Usually carried in the blood
2
Q
What is Paracrine signalling?
A
Signalling molecules only affects the target cells adjacent to the signalling cell e.g. neurotransmitters
3
Q
What is Autocrine signalling?
A
The cells releases and responds to the signalling substance
e.g. growth factors in tumour cells
4
Q
What SIX steps are involved in cell-to-cell communication?
A
- Synthesis of signalling molecule
- Release
- Transport to the target cell
- Detection by target cell (via receptors)
- Change in the target cell
- Removal and termination of the signal
5
Q
What are the THREE broad categories of signalling molecules?
A
- Small lipophilic / hydrophobic molecules that bind to intracellular receptors
- Hydrophilic molecules which bind cell surface receptors
- Other lipophilic molecules which bind cell surface receptors
