Introduction to Bones and Joints Flashcards
What is the diaphysis?
Main portion of long bones
What is the neck of a bone?
The part which attaches the diaphysis to the head of the bone
What is a condyle? What is an epicondyle?
A condyle is a raised bony protrusion which is used for articulation. An epicondyle is a rounded area superior to the condyle.
How many carpal bones are there?
Eight (8)
What is the difference between a tubercle and a tuberosity?
A tubercle is a raised area of bone for muscle attachment whereas a tuberosity is a “roughening” on the bone for muscle attachment
What are the different classifications of bones?
- long bones
- short bones
- flat bones
- pneumatic bones
- irregular bones
- sesamoids
What are the three main types of joints?
- fibrous
- cartilage
- synovial
What are the six criteria of synovial joints?
- articular surfaces are covered with hyaline cartilage
- has a joint cavity
- has a joint capsule
- has a synovial membrane
- reinforced by ligaments
- capable of varying degrees of movement
What are the types/classes of synovial joints?
- Planar
- Hinge
- Pivot
- condyloid
- saddle joint
- ball and socket
What is an example of a:
- Planar joint
- Hinge joint
- Pivot joint
- condyloid joint
- saddle joint
- ball and socket joint
- Navicular-cuneiform joint
- Humerus-ulna in elbow
- Head of radius and radial notch of ulna
- Radius-scaphoid/lunate joint
- Thumb @ trapezium and metacarpal
- Hip
What bones form the axial skeleton?
Skull and associated bones, vertebral column, ribs, sternum
What bones form the appendicular skeleton?
Scapula, clavicle, humerus, ulna, radius, carpals, metacarpals and phalanges, femur, pelvic bones, patella, tibia/fibula, tarsal bones, metatarsals and phalanges
How is the vertebral column categorized and how many bones does each segment have?
By region: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx.
There are seven cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae, 5 lumbar, 5 fused sacral, and 4 fused coccygeal.
What are the two types of intervertebral joints?
Synovial joints of the intervertebral articulations (zygapophyseal joints), and the intervertbral discs which are cartilage
