Introduction to behaviour modification Flashcards
What was the nurture effect?
it was ways to change many social problems. It stated that in order for a child to thrive, people around them need to reduce aggerssion around them, increase caring, giving them more attention.
The power of Habit and one example:
US military is one of the biggest places that teach through strict habit. Habit has an important role in the way it affects a person, in a society, and in there work.
What is Behavior?
they are verbs. they can be overt ( can be objectively measurable or covert (not observable by others,ex. thoughts and feelings).
What is a target behavior?
its the behavior that we want to modify.
Response
one instance or occurrence of a behavior.
Response class
a group of responses with the same function; that is, each response in the group produces the same effect on the environment.
Repertoire
collection of all behavior a person can perform.
What is a behaviour not?
its not a:
- interpretive description of a personality trait ( he is honest).
- a diagnostic label (depression, bipolar depression).
- products of behavior ( losing weight).
What is the DEAD man analogy?
if a dead man can do it, then it is not a behavior but if a dead man cannot do it then it is a behavior.
interaction between behavior and environment?
Behavior and environment can interact. The environment can lead to certain behaviors. While, behaviors can affect one’s environment.
Environmental consequences of a behavior can also a subsequent behaviour.
Explain the study done to answer, “How do cluttered classrooms affect students?”
n = 24 kindergarten students
independent variable: research laboratory modified to look like a classroom. Two groups:
1. decorated classroom condition –> very typical classroom
2. sparse-classroom condition –> contained very plain bright walls.
- children participated in six science lessons over a 2 week period.
In on-task, children were looking at teachers while in off-task, childen were looking all over the place, were distracted.
Results: in off-task behaviour: children were distracted 38.6% of time in the decoraed classroom vs. 28.4% in the sparse classroom.
conclusion: decorated classrooms produce more off-task behaviour, and decreased learning.
what is psychology>
is the scientific study of human behaviour and mental processing, it has three aspects:
- theoretical, experimental, and applied.
Define the three aspects on the psychology?
Theoretical: conceptual thinking, done at a computer, at a desk in an office.
Experimental: basic research, often with animals in a lab.
Applied: partical research and treatments to solve a problem, usually on people, in the real world.
