Define: superficial
nearer to surface
e.g. muscles of arm are superficial to its bone
Define: Intermediate
Between a superficial and a deep structure
e.g. biceps muscle is intermediate between skin and humerus
Define: Deep
Farther from surface
e.g. the humerus is deep to the arm muscles
Define: superior (cranial)
Nearer to the head
e.g. the heart is superior to the stomach
Define: Medial
Nearer to median plane
e.g. the 5th digit is on the medial side of the hand
Define: Lateral
Further from the median plane
e.g. the 1st digit is on the lateral side of the hand
Define: Posterior
Nearer to the back
e.g. the heel is posterior to the toes
Define: Inferior
Nearer to the feet
e.g. the stomach is inferior to the heart
Define: Anterior (ventral)
Nearer to the front
e.g. the toes are anterior to the ankle
Define: Proximal
Nearer to the trunk or origin point
e.g. the elbow is proximal to the wrist
Define: Distal
Farther from the trunk or point of origin
e.g. the wrist is distal to the elbow, the hand is the distal part of the upper limb
