STEREOTYPES
Strongly believed to be a social construction
GENDER
A casual notion of distinction as male or female, a man or woman, and boy or girl indicative of the stereotype generalization of the differences of each gender.

can be affected by social factors and may also appear different from one society to another depending on the way the society evaluate and understand these unique roles.

UNITED NATIONS CHARTER OF 1945 & UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN 1948
Launched the UN Decade for Women and campaigned for the Women in Development (WID) which emphasises women’s rights to development and gave voice to women in developing countries.
There was little focus on men and on power relations between men and women.
FIRST WORLD CONFERENCE FOR WOMEN IN MEXICO (1974)
Developed during the 80s with the goal of improving the development model by removing disparities in social, economic, and political balances between women and men as a pre-condition for achieving people-centered development.
Unlike WID, the GAD approach is not concerned specifically with women, but with the way in which a society assign roles, responsibilities, and expectations on both men and women.
GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT (GAD)
- Focuses on social construction of identities within the household.
- Reveals the expectations from maleness and femaleness in their relative access to resources.
GENDER ROLES
- Exposes the social dimensions of hierarchical power relations embedded in social institutions.
- Determining influence on the relative position of men and women in the society.
SOCIAL RELATIONS ANALYSIS
Integrating gender into development planning in all sectors of society which requires a uniform understanding of various concepts. These concepts include the concept of gender as compared with sex, and the concept of mainstreaming itself.
MAINSTREAMING
The sustained capacity to achieve a better and quality life.
Hence, development is about expanding the range of choices for people.
