Introduction - finish Flashcards
What is the study of algae called
Phycology
What are the 2 branches of phycology
- global biogeochemical importance
- harmful algae
Define photoautotrophy
photosynthetic conversion of inorganic caron to organic matter
Define heterotrophy
direct uptake of organic carbon from external environment
What are the 2 types of heterotrophy
- osmotrophy (uptake of dissolved organic matter)
- phagotrophy (animal-like consumption of particles for organic carbon (e.g. bacteria) and other nutrients)
Describe mixotrophy
a mixture of photoautotrophic and hetertrophy
What are the things that make algae different from plants
- lack vascular tissue
- lack of diploid multicellular embryophytic life stage
- algae have unicellular reproductive stages that often resemble their ancestors
Describe lichens
Symbiotic relationship between terrestrial algae and fungi
Algae are considered members of what kingdom
- kingdom Protista
–> exception to this rule is the cyanobacteria, they are not protista, they lack the reproductive structures but use the same biogeochemical cycles producing O2 like algae (so like algae they contribute to the oxygen cycle)
What were the first algae to first oxidize the oceans and atmosphere via oxygenic photosynthesis
prokaryotic cyanobacteria
