Introduction and Newton's Laws Flashcards
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull.
Name whether the following are pushing or pulling forces:
- Weight
- Normal
- Applied Force
Pull
Push
Push or pull
What is the unit we use to measure all forces?
The Newton with symbol N
What is the instrument used to measure force called?
Spring Balance/Newton Meter
What are the five effects that forces can have on objects?
1) Some forces produce no motion
2) Some forces cause motion
3) Some forces may change the direction of motion
4) Some forces may rotate an object
5) Some forces cause the deformation of an object
What are the 4 contact forces?
Normal forces
Friction Forces
Air Friction
Tension forces
What are the 3 non-contact forces?
Gravitational force
Magnetic force
Electrostatic force
Newton’s 1st Law:
An object at rest will remain at rest, or if in motion, remains in motion at a constant velocity unless acted on by a net external force.
Newton’s 2nd Law:
When a resultant force acts on a body the body will accelerate in the direction of the resultant force.
