Mental Disorder
Four Characteristics of Mental Disorder:
1) Personal Distress
2) Disability
3) Violation of Social Norms
4) Dysfunction
A person’s behavior may be classified as disordered if it causes them great distress. However, NOT all mental disorder cause distress, and NOT all behavior that causes distress is disordered.
Personal Distress
This is an impairment in some important areas of life. However, this alone cannot be used to define mental disorders.
Disability
These are widely held standards by society. However, this is not necessarily signs of a mental disorder.
