One which is caused entirely by genetic changes. Although individually they are rare, collectively they affect millions of people worldwide

3 types of inheritance patterns
Autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and sex-linked
Autosomal dominant definition
Disease presents when there are genetic mutations in one copy of tea genes. If a parent possesses a mutant gene there is a 50% chance of passing it to their offspring
Autosomal recessive definition
Disease presents only when there are genetic mutations in both copy of the gene, this means that both parents have to carry a mutation gene copy and offspring will have a 25% chance of inheritance
Sex-linked definition
Inherited through mutations in the X and Y chromosomes
