Introduction Flashcards
List the 2 major groups of skin. (2)
- Cutaneous (epithelial/ skin)
2. Connective tissue (synovial membranes)
What 2 layers is cutaneous membrane composed of? (2)
- Superficial epidermis
2. Underlying dermis
What is the dermis mainly composed of?
Dense, fibrous connective tissue
Is the cutaneous membrane wet or dry and why? (2)
- Dry
2. It is exposed to air
What are mucous membranes composed of?
Epithelium resting on loose connective tissue membrane
What is the fancy name for the epithelium resting on loose connective tissue for mucous membranes?
Lamina propria
Define: lamina propria
Epithelium resting on loose connective tissue membrane → part of the mucous membranes
What is the main function of epithelial tissue?
Line the body’s cavities that open to the exterior such as hollow organs
What is the location of the epithelial membrane?
Mucosa
What is the mucosa mostly composed of (type of cell)?
Stratified squamous epithelium
Are the mucous membranes wet or dry?
Wet
What are mucous membranes adapted for?
Absorption or secretion
State the name for serous membranes.
Serosa
Describe the composition of the serosa. (1)
Squamous epithelium resting on a thin layer of areolar connective tissue
What is the main function of serous membranes?
Line the body cavities that are closed to the exterior
Differentiate between the main function of most epithelial tissues and the serous membrane. (2)
- Most epithelial membranes line the body’s cavities that are OPEN to the exterior (hollow organs)
- Serous membranes line the body cavities that are CLOSED to the exterior
What layer of the serosa line the ventral body and how does it do so? (2)
- Parietal layer
2. Folds in on itself to form the visceral layer (covers the outside of organs)
What are serous layers separated by and why? (2)
- Serous fluid
2. Lubricates the organs to allow them to slide easily without friction
What category of membrane does synovial membrane fall under?
Connective tissue membrane
Describe the composition of synovial membrane. (3)
- Loose areolar connective tissue
- Contains no epithelial cells
- Contain bursae
Define: bursae
Small sacs of connective tissue containing synovial fluid
What is unique about synovial membranes? (2)
- Cushion organs as they move against each other during muscle activity
- Also reduces friction of joints
List 4 types of damage the skin protects against. (4)
- Mechanical
- Thermal
- UV
- Chemical
What are the 3 main purposes of skin in general? (3)
- Protect
- Insulate
- Cusion
State the name of the acidic secretions produced by the skin, and the purpose of these secretions. (2)
- Acid mantle
2. Protects against bacterial invasion
