Why cooperation between organisations that provide services to children are vital?
By working together they can compile and share information to help create a full picture of the family and it’s needs as many people and agencies have small pieces of information that may seem insignificant by its own but can build a case when compiled with other information.
What is the basic definition of child abuse?
A child under 18 years of age who is suffering or likely to suffer:
- physical injury
- neglect
- emotional abuse
- sexual abuse
A child will be considered as being abused or at risk of abuse when the basic needs are not being met through…
Acts of commission
Acts of omission
Define acts of commission
Somebody does something to a child which leads to harm: injuries or tries to sexual assault
Acts of omission
Somebody fails to do something which leads to harm of a child. Ex. Consistently failing to provide adequate and suitable food.
Why are we all required to work together to prevent harm to children?
Because child abuse has real consequences such as the death of Victoria Climbie who suffered chronic neglect and severe physical abuse. Classic exemple of what may happen if the organisations do not communicate and work with each other.
What changed since Lord Laming’s report on Victoria’s case came to light?
Since Victoria, there have been other similar cases which suggests improvements outlined in Lord Laming’s report have not been totally embedded in frontline practice.
Since baby Peter, Lord Laming was asked to produce a progress report on safeguarding to include:
What good practice had been achieved since Victoria’s enquire
Key barriers, including in the legal process, that may impede efficient and effective work
Identify specific actions to be taken at Governmental, national and local levels to overcome barriers
Lord laming made 58 recommendations after baby Peter enquire. Which areas did he cover?
Leadership and accountability - support for children
Inter-agency working - children’s workforce
Improvement and challenge
Organisation and finance - legalities
Who’s responsibility of safeguarding children?
It is everyone’s responsibility. Safeguard, promote and protect.
Disabled children
More vulnerable to all forms of abuse than non disabled children.
Are more dependent on parents and carers
May be less able to speak out about their abuse.
What physical abuse may involve?
Hitting Shaking Throwing Poisoning Burning Scalding Drowning Suffocating Or other physical harm When a parent/carer fabricates the symptoms of, or deliberately induces, illness in a child.
Are all injures abuse?
No. All children, especially toddlers, are injured from time to time and a vast majority are accidental.
What are the signs of a possible non-accidental injury?
Delay by parents/carers in seeking medical help or such help may not have been sought after.
Vague account of the accident or vary from one telling to another. Parents reliving a real accident will be detailed and consistent
No explanation of the injury at all.
Child not allowed to tell what happened.
