The European Union is a supranational, partially sovereignty-sharing organization, integrating 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe.
Who can join the EU?
The treaty of the European Union (article 49): any European state which respects the values referred to in article 2 and is committed to promoting them may apply to become a member of the union. The conditions of eligibility agreed upon by the European council shall be taken into account.
What are he conditions of eligibility?
The Copenhagen criteria (1993) define the preconditions of accession:
Political criteria: institutional stability, democracy, rule of law, protection of human rights and if minorities
Economic criteria: functioning market economy, ability to stand up to market pressure from single market
Acquis- criteria: implementation of acquis communautaire into national law
