Introduction Flashcards
(15 cards)
Define Environment
All the living( biotic) and non living (abiotic) factors that affects an organism
What is environmental studies ?
The study of the natural environment and how human interact with it, while focusing on understanding and solving environmental problems
What are the 7 disciplines of environmental studies
Economics, Ecology, Physics, Forestry, Geography, engineering and political science
what are the roles of an environmental scientist
- monitor the quality of the environment
- develop strategies to restore ecosystem
- work with planners to construct buildings,
transportation and corridor - investigate the impact of human activity on the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem
Two main categories of natural resources
Renewable and non- renewable energy
what’s another name for natural resources
natural capital
define pollution, pollutant and persistence
pollution refers to the negative change in the environment that affects human and other living things.
Pollutants- harmful substances that causes pollution
persistence refers to the duration in which a pollutant remains before degrading
what are the two main categories of pollutant
degradable and non- degradable
Define environmental sustainability
The ability of the environment to function indefinitely. It involves maintaining the ecosystem. conserving the natural resources and reducing pollution all of which are policy to support the health of the environment
Importance of environmental sustainability
It is important because we depend on natural resources for survival.
If we deplete the natural resources and pollution increase this will endanger the life of future generation
Current Unsustainable Human
Behaviours Include:
- the use of renewable energy faster than nature can regenerate. ( if we overexploit our resources we’ll run out and it’s imperative for human survival
- Urbanization ( the increase in development of cities and infrastructure in urban areas which leads to deforestation and a depletion of natural habitat, it may also lead to overpopulation
- increase pollution( once an area is overpopulated more machines are made for eg vehicles which leads to more air pollution form the exhaust.
4.Unchecked use of non-renewable resources is unsustainable because: resources become scarce when used beyond availability point
due to resources being limited
What are some environmental issues that are stemmed from human activities? and which human activity causes them
Species Endangerment and
Extinction - Land Degradation(human activity)
Global Warming - Water Shortage and Pollution(human activity)
Acid Deposition- Ozone Depletion(stemmed from human activity
Natural Resource Depletion - caused by Improper Solid Waste Disposal
Define environmental ethics
A discipline that studies
moral convictions about,
or commitment to, one
type of behaviour over
another as it relates to
the environment
