Introduction Flashcards
What is data science?
It is a study that uses statistics, computer science, and machine learning to gather and/or make predictions from data, which can be in different forms (i.e., nominal, ordinal, discrete, and continuous).
What is the meaning of VUCA?
Volatile - rapid and unpredictable changes
Uncertain - uncertain future
Complex - different factors may cause disruption
Ambiguous - lack of clarity about situations
Are we living in a VUCA world?
Yes. The world is volatile; a single word from our government could reverse the dynamic between us and those at the top of the pyramid. The world is also uncertain; I might be wearing a mask now and make sure to practice proper hygiene, but that doesn’t ensure that I won’t get the flu or even Mpox. The world is also complex; from street vendors, actors, contractors, students, babies, knowing their age, where they live, their nationality, and how many bones they’ve, no amount of information can help us predict the direction humanity is heading towards. Finally, the world is also ambiguous; the biggest question I think most of us ask ourselves is, “Why are we here?”, “Why was I born on the 18th of June as a Filipino in Iloilo?”, “Are we the only ones in the universe?” and stuff like that. These are ambiguous questions with equally ambiguous answers.
How can data science help us navigate through this VUCA world?
Data science can help us navigate through this VUCA world by giving us the perfect platform — with elements from math, statistics, computer science, machine learning, analytics, etc. — to make informed decisions/predictions from intepreting various forms of data from different sources.

What are the core skills in Data Science according to Drew Conway?
- Hacking skills + math and statistics knowledge = machine learning
- Math and statistics knowledge + substantive expertise = traditional research
- All combined = data science
