Introduction Flashcards
Why do we live in a world of nation-states?
International Politics emerged through the concept of nation-states.
- international politics and nation-states are fairly new concepts
Sovereignty
the authority of the state, based on recognition by other states and non-state actors, to govern matters within its own borders that affect its people, economy, security, and form of government.
- the right to self-govern within your territory (nation-state)
- this is defined in territorial terms: Authority geographically
Nation-States
the entity formed when people sharing the same historical, cultural, or linguistic roots form their state with borders, a government, and international recognition.
- e.g.. Europe, India: We know the borders, leaders, and policies; in Europe in history (without nation states) during the Roman Empire, boarders were unclear, no clear leader, multiple loyalties–non territorial–universal power–no distinction
