Introduction Flashcards
Context
Before 1941, Black people living in America faced extreme discrimination and were denied their civil rights under the U.S constitution. This was enforced by intimidation of powerful organisations, the existence of prejudice, and de jure and de facto segregation.
Factors
Some Historians argue that the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) were fundamental in preventing Black Americans achieving their civil rights, in addition to popular prejudice and the ‘separate but equal’ decision.
Line of Argument
This essay will argue that although the KKK activities were a significant obstacle to black civil rights, popular prejudice was a larger obstacle to these being achieved.
