Intro - context
Before 1941 America was extremely racist. The treatment of various groups worsened depending on their position in the racial hierarchy.
Black people were extremely discriminated against in this time and were subjected to De Jure segregation in the Southern states and de facto segregation in the Northern states.
This prevented them from achieving civil rights.
Intro - factors
Some historians argue that the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) were fundamental in preventing Black Americans from achieving civil rights, in addition to popular prejudice, legal impediments and the “separate but equal” decision of the supreme court.
Intro - line of argument
This essay will argue that although the activities of the Ku Klux Klan was significant in preventing black people from achieving civil rights, popular prejudice was the most important barrier.
