Introduction Flashcards
What are the 7 step evidence based practice in nursing?
Step 0: Cultivating Curiosity
Step 1: Asking answerable questions
Step 2: Searching the evidence
Step 3: Appraising the evidence
Step 4: Integrating evidence into practice
Step 5: Evaluating practice change
Step 6: Disseminating results of evaluation
What is nursing research?
Research undertaking intended to extend knowledge by nurses or consumed by nurses through asystematic investigation to answer questions or solve problems.
Types of research:
-Therapy/intervention questions
* Diagnosis/assessment questions
* Prognosis questions
* Etiology (prevention) questions
* Description questions
* Meaning questions
Step Zero: Cultivate a spirit of inquiry
Asking ourself questions
Step 1: Asking answerable questions
Ask clinical questions in PICOT format
P: Patient population of interest
I: Intervention or area of interest
C: Comparison intervention or group
O: Outcome
T: Time
Step 2: Search for the best evidence
Using the PICOT framework to help identify key words for searching data
Step 3: Critically appraise the evidence
“Rapid critical appraisal uses the three important questions to evaluate a study’s worth”
Are the results of the study valid?
For study validity
What are the results and are they important?
For study reliability
Will the results help me care for my patient?
For study applicability
“After appraising each study, the next step is to synthesize the studies to determine if they come to similar conclusions, thus supporting an EBP decision or change.”
Step 4: Integrating evidence into practice
Integrate the evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences and values
Need to take into account the reality of the situation and clinical variables
Step 5: Evaluating practice change
Evaluate the outcomes of the practice decisions or changes based on evidence
Monitoring to evaluate any changes in outcomes (positive and negatives effets or result differ from those reported in the research literature)
Step 6: Disseminating results of evaluation
Disseminate EBP results
Share it with others, organisation, colleagues and institutions
Prevention question:
Question about the effectiveness of interventions to prevent disease or harms
Ex: Is cranberry juice effective for UTI prevention in women?
Therapy/intervention question:
Questions about the effectiveness of tx or others interventions to improve patient outcomes
Ex: In recurrent UTI, are probiotics an effective tx?
Diagnosis/assessment question:
Questions about a possible dx given a patient’s sx or ssx OR about specific dx tests and how well they work.
Ex: If a female px has a fever and complains of UTI and urgency, what is the possible dx?
Ex: Is using dipstick urinalysis as effective as laboratory analysis for UTI dx?
