Introduction Flashcards
What is systematic theology?
Systematic Theology is any study that answers the question, “What does the whole bible teach us today?”
What is involved in systematic theology?
Systematic Theology involves collecting and understanding all the relevant passages in the bible on various topics, reading and understanding each passage so clearly, that we can summarize their teaching clearly so that we know what to believe about each topic.
How is systematic theology different from New Testament theology, Old Testament theology, and biblical theology?
NT theology focuses on analyzing and understanding from a NT perspective. OT theology focuses on analyzing and understanding from an OT perspective. Biblical theology focuses on the teaches of individual authors and sections, and to the place of each teaching in historical development. Systematic theology focuses on the whole bible.
What is the diff btwn systematic theology and Christian Ethics?
ST emphasizes what God wants us to believe and know (faith). Christian Ethics emphasizes what God wants us to do and what attitude he wants us to have (character).
How does studying ST help a Christian?
It helps us overcome wrong ideas, helps us make better decisions when new questions about doctrine arise, and it helps us grow and mature as Christians.
How should Christians study ST?
Through prayer and guidance from the Holy Spirit, with humility, and with human reason, understanding, and logic. By collecting and understanding all the relevant passages of scripture on any topic, and with rejoicing and praise.
Matthew 28:18-20
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Ps. 119:11
Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
