Introduction Flashcards
What is virology?
study of viruses and viral diseases
What is a virologist?
Person who studies viruses
What is veterinary virology
study of viruses in non-human animals
Why is vet virology important? (3)
high sickness and death
financial losses
zoonoses
Are viruses living?
no, non-living entities
Components of a virus
nucleic acid genome (DNA/RNA) w/ protein coat
sometimes envelope
Do viruses possess organelles?
No, no standard organelles
Why are viruses referred to as obligate intracellular parasites?
rely on host cell, hijacks and uses cell to assemble themselves and the next generation
Do viruses divide?
No, they use an assembly line using parts of the host cell.
Virion
complete virus particle w/ RNA/DNA with protein coat or envelope
EXTRACELLULAR INFECTIVE FORM
Virus
any aspect of infectious agent, includes:
virion, inactivated virus particle, viral nucleic acid and protein in infected cell
Viroid
infectious particle SMALLER than any of the known viruses. usually plant diseases
What genome does a viroid possess?
extremely small circular RNA with NO PROTEIN COAT
Is a viroid a virus?
NO IT DOESNT HAVE A PROTEIN COAT
What did Edward Jenner do?
inoculated cowpox into a healthy 8 yr old who became immune to smallpox
FIRST RECORDED VX HX
